How to Make Video Calls: Staying Close When You’re Far Away

Updated: 12 Oct 2025 • Digital Basics & Everyday Life

Technology makes it possible to stay close to the people we care about, even when distance keeps us apart. Video calling brings family and friends right into our living rooms, helping reduce loneliness and keep connections strong.

For older adults and people with disability, learning to use video calls can open new doors to independence and joy. At Troubleshoot IT, I often see how a simple video chat can brighten someone’s day and make them feel part of the world again.

Choosing a video calling app

There are many free apps that let you make video calls on phones, tablets, and computers. The most common ones are FaceTime, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and WhatsApp. Each one works a little differently, but all follow the same idea: you connect your camera and microphone, and you can see and talk to the other person in real time.

FaceTime is popular for Apple users, while Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet work on almost any device. WhatsApp is great for quick calls between friends and family.

Preparing for your first call

Before starting, make sure your device is charged and connected to Wi-Fi. Find a quiet spot with good lighting so the other person can see and hear you clearly. If possible, use a stand or prop your device up so you do not need to hold it during the call.

When someone sends you a meeting link, simply tap or click it, then allow access to your camera and microphone if asked. Once connected, you will see their face appear on the screen, and the conversation begins.

Making calls easier and more comfortable

Practice helps build confidence. Try a short test call with a friend or relative before joining a bigger group chat. Speak naturally and look toward the camera to make eye contact.

If hearing or vision is an issue, most apps have accessibility features such as captions, volume controls, and larger buttons. These small adjustments make calls more enjoyable and less tiring.

Connecting beyond distance

Video calls are more than just technology; they are a way to share moments that matter. You can celebrate birthdays, read stories with grandchildren, or simply say hello face to face. For many people, it is a comfort to see a familiar smile and hear a friendly voice.

At Troubleshoot IT, I help people across Darwin and the Northern Territory, and through remote sessions across Australia, learn how to make and receive video calls with confidence. Whether you are using a phone, tablet, or computer, I can guide you step by step until it feels easy and natural.
