How Voice Assistants Like Alexa and Google Help Around the Home

Updated: 12 Oct 2025 • Accessibility & Independence

Voice assistants are changing the way people interact with technology. Tools like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri allow you to control your devices simply by speaking. For many older adults and people with disability, these assistants are more than a convenience, they can be a helpful companion that supports independence at home.

I often introduce clients to voice assistants for the first time and watch their faces light up when they realise how much these tools can do. Once they get comfortable saying “Hey Google” or “Alexa,” the possibilities open up quickly.

Everyday tasks made easier

Voice assistants can answer questions, tell you the weather, or set reminders for medication and appointments. They can play your favourite music, tell jokes, and even read the news out loud. With a smart speaker in the room, you can get hands-free help whenever you need it.

For people who have limited movement or find small buttons difficult to press, voice control can make a big difference. You can ask the assistant to turn on lights, adjust air conditioning, or control a TV that is connected to a smart plug or smart remote.

Staying connected and informed

Voice assistants can also help reduce loneliness by making communication simpler. You can use them to make calls, send messages, or start a video chat with family and friends. Some people like to ask for daily updates or fun facts, keeping them mentally active and engaged with the world.

It is amazing how a small device can help someone feel more included, especially for those living alone or with mobility challenges.

Supporting independence

Using voice commands gives people a sense of control and confidence. Tasks that once required help from others can often be done independently. Whether it is checking a calendar, setting reminders, or listening to music, voice technology provides freedom and peace of mind.

At Troubleshoot IT, I teach people across Darwin and the Northern Territory, as well as clients across Australia through remote sessions, how to use these tools safely and confidently. Together, we explore how simple technology can make everyday life easier and more enjoyable.
